Book Review – To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

Lara Jean keeps her love letters in a hatbox her mother gave her.
One for every boy she’s ever loved.
When she writes, she can pour out her heart and soul and say all the things she would never say in real life, because her letters are for her eyes only.
Until the day her secret letters are mailed, and suddenly Lara Jean’s love life goes from imaginary to out of control!

My rating:

I was pleasantly surprised by this contemporary as I often don’t love them. But I thought this was a lovely romance story (which coming from someone who doesn’t like romance says a lot!) with a really gorgeous family relationship in it.
Lara Jean is a very sheltered main character, and somehow juuuuust nudges it over into endearing from annoying. She can be, don’t get me wrong, and she can be entitled and whingey, but at her core she’s a dreamy girl who’s been spoiled by her sister and her dad, and loves her family more than anything. In fact that was my favourite part – she’s a home body at heart. She just wants to take care of her family. Margot did it out of necessity, but Lara Jean loves her for it and wanted to be like her. That was lovely. And the part with them after Christmas made me cry my heart out.
I live the lightness Kitty brings too, even if she’s a little bit bratty at times, she’s good hearted with it.
And then the boys. Ugh. At times I wanted to drown them both. Josh is a entitled blind idiot who doesn’t know what he wants and Peter is a dumb jock. At times. But they were both also sweet and considerate, amazingly and respectful of Lara Jean’s love for her family.
I will definitely be picking up the next book.

Yeah – it’s a little too contemporary for me normally, but it’s super cute

Oooh glad you enjoyed it. It has also been on my TBR for ages, and I picked up the second one as I had to buy a book to get signed. so I really should get to it soon. And you usually have very similar tastes to me with fantasy, so it’ll be interesting to see if I agree with the contemporary side of it too 😀 <3

Great post! I enjoyed ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ and the rest of the collection – Han’s depiction of family and capturing that teen romance always takes me back to my childhood. Keeping an eye out for your reviews on the next books in this collection…
