Book Review – Amari and the Night Brothers by B. B. Alston

Amari Peters knows three things.
Her big brother Quinton has gone missing.
No one will talk about it.
His mysterious job holds the secret…
So when Amari gets an invitation to the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, she’s certain this is her chance to find Quinton. But first she has to get her head around the new world of the Bureau, where mermaids, aliens and magicians are real, and her roommate is a weredragon.
Amari must compete against kids who’ve known about the supernatural world their whole lives, and when each trainee is awarded a special supernatural talent, Amari is given an illegal talent – one that the Bureau views as dangerous.
With an evil magician threatening the whole supernatural world, and her own classmates thinking she is the enemy, Amari has never felt more alone. But if she doesn’t pass the three tryouts, she may never find out what happened to Quinton…

My rating:

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This book was everything I wanted it to be and more! Amari is a wonderful main character who mostly wants to find out more about what happened to her brother. When she discovers the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, a whole new world – and a new view of Quinton’s disappearance – is opened up to her.
I love that magicians are the bad guys here – this may be a book about magic but it focuses on the abilities the kids already have, and what is possible with inventions etc. It’s a nice twist on the expected. Plus we get the nuance of perhaps magicians aren’t all that bad 😉
Amari is smart but also kind and brave. And I particularly love her friendship with Elsie, so supportive! And it’s just wonderful to not only have Amari as a black girl heroine but also to show her background and neighbourhood as part of that. I feel it’s going to be an important part of her story.
While Amari is a chosen one and this book does play into that cliche, it twists it as well, with the way magicians play into everything. I did suspect some of the parts about the villain(s) but I loved one of the reveals!
I desperately want the next book now and am gutted I have to wait. Definitely a new favourite. 5 stars.

I was so hyped about this book, and so excited to have been asked to take part.
Thanks to The Write Reads, Egmont and B B Alston for this blog tour 🙂

Great review! I absolutely loved how the supernatural abilities are picked and thought it was not only really fun but unique as well 😃 I thought the twists and turns in this story were awesome and can’t wait to come back to it in future books.

It was really intresting. I love how it involved a lost person and that they had to find him. It was really cool that her friends helped her find her brother. I would of done the same thing.
