Series Review – Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan and Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan

I spent some time last year firstly re-reading the Percy Jackson Series, and then reading the Heroes of Olympus series.  And I was surprised how much I enjoyed them.  I liked PJO the first time round, but this time I got to enjoy remembering little bits as well 🙂 They are great middle grade books, teaching good morals and elements of Greek Mythology while being fun and easy to read.  A solid 4 star series, easily.

PJO

Then we move onto the Heroes of Olympus series.  I’d not read these previously, and just loved them.  The last two in particular are amazing.  The series feels a little less middle grade and a little more YA, partially because Percy grows up a fair bit during the PJO series.  I loved the new Roman elements, I loved that the books flow more from one to the next than PJO (which are yearly summer serials) and I loved the new characters.  I can’t wait to see them back again.  And there are SO MANY FEELS in these books.  ALL THE FEELS.  I am still a little broken hehe.  I highly recommend giving them a shot.  Still great fun, full of adventure and peril!

  1. I read the first Percy Jackson book a few years ago and I just didn’t get on with it. It felt a bit too immature to me and I was really upset because I knew it was something I would have absolutely loved if I’d read it when I was younger. I mean I love Greek mythology! But recently I’ve been hearing that the heroes of olympus series is more YA like you said. So I’m definitely going to give that a go. Do you think it’s necessary to have read the first series to understand or do things get explained okay to just jump in?
