The (Birthday) Cake Book Tag

rainbow cake

I stole this tag from Angela at Pooled Ink Reviews, who did it for her birthday, and I thought that was a lovely idea! Today I turn 34. Sometimes I feel like an old lady in this community, but honestly I mostly don’t – we all enjoy the same things after all!

a dark book you absolutely love

This Savage Song was the darkest book I can think of that I loved! It’s just so unlike anything I’ve ever read, and all the characters have dark elements. I can’t recommend it enough.

a light read

Okay, so technically, Piglettes is not that light a read as it deals with a couple of impactful topics.  BUT. It is so happy and such a lovely, cute and easy read, that I had to pick it.  Plus I don’t see enough people talking about it!

a book that gave you mixed emotions

I enjoyed Girl, Missing, but it just wasn’t what I wanted it to be, and I found the age of the main character unbelievable.

a book you would recommend to anyone

I would definitely recommend Moxie, it has such a great theme, and brilliant characters.  I dare you not to feel empowered after reading it.

a book you started but never finished

coffee cake

Okay for starters – I love coffee cake, so I am offended by this connection 😉 but I also don’t DNF many books so couldn’t easily pick one here.

a book with great writing

I think The Bear and the Nightingale is such a good book, and the writing is so atmospheric and beautiful.

a book that left you wanting more

I just want more in this universe, and will always be up for more of Leigh Bardugo’s writing. Wonder Woman is a fab combo of DC brilliance and inclusivity that I would definitely snap up more of.

a series with 4+ books

I love the Peter Grant books by Ben Aaronovitch, they’re a great combination of police procedural and magic! Plus there’s loads of in jokes about Britain, and London specifically, plus our transport systems.  Aaronovitch is obviously a little bit of a transport nerd, and I appreciate that in a person.

a book that wasn’t what you anticipated

Enchantment of Ravens was a book that just didn’t deliver on the premise for me, though I know many people loved it.

I really enjoyed that, and I hope you did too 😀 I’m not tagging anyone, so feel free to grab it if you want to have a go! Also, now I want cake.
