Lovelace was once merely a ship’s artificial intelligence. When she wakes up in an new body, following a total system shut-down and reboot, she has no memory of what came before. As Lovelace learns to negotiate the universe and discover who she is, she makes friends with Pepper, an excitable engineer, who’s determined to help her learn and grow.
Together, Pepper and Lovey will discover that no matter how vast space is, two people can fill it together.
I totally adored The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, and had really high expectations for this installment. And luckily, they were met!
A Closed and Common Orbit is a very different book from TLWTASAP. It’s quieter, set planet side and has a smaller cast. But it shares all the great things – the way Chambers has a very inclusive world, the way sci-fi almost folds into contemporary by blending everyday life with AIs and spaceships and aliens. I just love that.
I really enjoyed getting to see Sidra go through everything she did, and coming to terms with everything. I think, despite everything, some elements are very relatable. I especially thought that the almost body dystrophin elements were particularly powerful. I also loved her friendship with Tak.
I liked Pepper in ALWTOSAP, and really enjoyed getting to know her here. And Blue 💙 they’re so cute. But Pepper’s back story was really what sold this book. Her and Owl are the best and I was full on sobbing by the end.
I am completely sold on Becky Chambers and I think she is now on my must buy author list. I have already pre ordered the third book, so now I am reduced to waiting impatiently!!
