“You have to help me. We’re not being reformed. We’re being brainwashed.”
All sixteen year old Drew Finch wants is to be left alone. She’s not interested in spending time with her mum and stepdad and when her disruptive fifteen year old brother Mason is expelled from school for the third time and sent to a residential reform academy she’s almost relieved.
Everything changes when she’s followed home from school by the mysterious Dr Cobey, who claims to have a message from Mason. There is something sinister about the ‘treatment’ he is undergoing. The school is changing people.
Determined to help her brother, Drew must infiltrate the Academy and unearth its deepest, darkest secrets.
Before it’s too late.
Ooh I really enjoyed this! I was lucky enough to see Cally speak at an event, and picked this up after as her books sounded good. I’m so pleased I did!
This was such a good mix of teen trying to help, conspiracy, evil doing, and twists. PLUS Drew is not magically excellent at the exact things needed to pull off her plan. In fact, pretty much none of her plans go as expected. I really loved that.
The only thing stopping me giving this 5 stars is that the ending felt a little rushed, both in the final scenes, but also all the wrap up in general.
I really liked Drew’s determination and quick thinking in the face of ridiculous odds, and her eventual friendship with Mouse. She turned out to be awesome! There were a couple of twists I saw, but one major one I didn’t, and I loved how that one played out too. I obviously can’t say what (spoilers!) but it was pretty clever.
Definitely worth a read.
