Book Review – Meet Cute Club by Jack Harbon
Jordan Collins doesn’t need a man.
What he needs is for his favorite author to release another one of her sexy supernatural novels and more people to sign up for the romance book club that he fears is slowly and steadily losing its steam. He also needs for the new employee at his local bookstore to stop making fun of him for reading things meant for “grandmas.”
The very last thing he needs is for that same employee, Rex Bailey, to waltz into his living room and ask to join Meet Cute Club. Despite his immediate thoughts – like laughing in his face and telling him to kick rocks – Jordan decides that if he wants this club to continue thriving, he can’t turn away any new members. Not even ones like Rex, who somehow manage to be both frustratingly obnoxious and breathtakingly handsome.
As Jordan and Rex team up to bring the club back from the ashes, Jordan soon discovers that Rex might not be the arrogant troll he made himself out to be, and that, like with all things in life, maybe he was wrong to judge a book by its cover.
My rating:
The book club setting is cute, and it’s a pretty enjoyable romcom overall, albeit one without much depth.
I had hoped for more from this though – I had an ‘enemies to lovers’ type vibe, but that is quickly dealt with and more moves into a “will they actually get their heads out their butts to deal with this”.
I think I was hoping that there would be more friction between Jordan and Rex. Instead we get a small amount, and then they flip flop between wanting to be together, wanting to help each other and not being able to talk about anything in order to drive up tension between them that just isn’t there. Their relationship just really didn’t do much for me.
The friendships in the book club are also similarly superficial. We get characters drop in and out, and only ever see them in small amounts so we never get much from them. Jordan classes the book club as the most important thing in his life, but doesn’t seem to generate much effort for the people who attend it!
However, the “saving the club” storyline was pretty cute, as was the ending (no spoilers, but lovely touch for a bookworm).
