Book Review – Light Years by Kass Morgan
Reeling from the latest attack by a mysterious enemy, the Quatra Fleet Academy is finally admitting students from every planet in the solar system after centuries of exclusivity.
Hotshot pilot Vesper, an ambitious Tridian citizen, dreams of becoming a captain – but when she loses her spot to a brilliant, wisecracking boy from the wrong side of the asteroid belt, it makes her question everything she thought she knew. Growing up on the toxic planet Deva, Cormak will take any chance he can get to escape his dead-end life and join the Academy – even if he has to steal someone’s identity to do it. Arran was always considered an outsider on icy Chetire, always dreaming of something more than a life working in the mines. Now an incoming cadet, Arran is looking for a place to belong – he just never thought that place would be in the arms of a Tridian boy. And Orelia is hiding a dark secret – she’s infiltrated the Academy to complete a mission, one that threatens the security of everyone there. But if anyone finds out who she really is, it’ll be her life on the line.
These cadets will have to put their differences aside and become a team to defend their world from a cunning enemy – but the danger might be lurking closer to home than they think…

My rating:

I went in thinking I’d enjoy Light Years, as it sounded fantastic, and I have been loving my sci fi recently. And I was right! I like the whole set up, though I’d definitely have liked more background on why the “edgers” were just that, and so looked down on. The concept of a set of planets where one is superior to the others reminded me a little of Firefly actually 🙂
And I loved the intrigue we see because of Orelia, her storyline was my favourite. I’m dying to know where the truth lies, between what she knows and her classmates know. She’s a very hard character to get to know though, but I liked her softening with time and realising that there’s more to life than the mission. And I need to know what comes next for her!
I can’t choose between Arran and Cormak for favourite character though, they’re both really intriguing and fun to read for different reasons. Arran’s relationship with Dash is so cute though. And I liked Cormak’s background (shocker as it’s very morally grey lol!)
I felt for Vesper, but I wanted more about her – why her mum is like she is, and how she became friends with some of her crowd.
Overall it’s a really fun sci fi adventure. Nothing too different, but some great elements and good characters.

I enjoyed this one as well, although it wasn’t quite what I hoped for. the way the m/m relationship ended up was a let down for me :/ Vesper ended up one of my faves, and I thought her relationship with Cormack was adorable! I’ll definitely pick up the sequel when it’s out later this year, I’m interested to see where things go with these characters

Aw sad about the let down, but glad you’re still picking up the sequel!
