Book Review – Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race are trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters. Spensa, a teenage girl living among them, longs to be a pilot. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible—assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her. Because this ship, uniquely, appears to have a soul.

My rating:

I buddy read this with a friend and each day it was harder and harder to stop! In fact twice we did an extra bit hehe. This book is really good. Fun, full of action, heart wrenching, mysterious. It has it all!!
Spensa is pretty likeable to start off, but she becomes more and more so as the book goes on – she really grows up. I mean I loved her from the start because she has a teddy bear called Bloodletter, which is frankly AMAZING, but I loved how flight training got to her, how her crew grounded her, she gained doubts and fears and restraint, but also warmed up to the others. Several of my favourite things were almost background – her relationship with Rig is clearly important to them both, and their friendship is solid. This is well shown, despite the fact they don’t end up sharing a lot of page time! Amazing. Her actions at the end, especially right before graduation, show just how far she’s come, but it’s downplayed against everything else that is going on. This is great writing!
Her relationships with the flight were great too – I won’t go into too much detail because there are so many spoilers to avoid here, but they were all fab and I’m glad each of them had a little moment.
The last 150 pages or so were unputdownable. You learn SO much, and there is so much action, and yet I still want MORE! Omg. And I’m so glad we get to see both what happened with her dad and her dealing with it. That’s all I say cause of spoilers but it’s awesome.
I had so many theories about the Krell, and basically all of them were wrong lol. And I think that made it more enjoyable – I never would have guessed their real goal.
And the history of the people and the info from her gran, I am dying for that to progress now – there’s so much potential now.
Finally I come to what is likely everyone’s favourite – M-Bot! Omg so good. I love an AI, but M-Bot is sarky, sassy, caring, and obsessed with mushrooms!!! Part of me wants a back story on that last but I also love how random it is. 😂😂🍄
Can I please have book 2 now?? Also now I want to go back to the mistborn trilogy!

Buy Skyward from Amazon UK.

Great review! Sanderson’s books become un-putdownable in the final arc, don’t they! Would mean a lot if you checked out my review as well.
