I received this book from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
I need to stop saying I don’t read horror books, and Kat Ellis’ brand of thriller-horror genius is a good reason why. I found this utterly compelling and engaging from start to finish.
From the creepy town ghost story that literally haunts Ava, to the ongoing mystery of who the killer is, this puts together everything I want in a thriller with a good few scary moments to boot. The atmosphere is fairly bleak, which I kind of love, and the story definitely kept me guessing throughout.
I also loved that Ava herself is struggling with everything. Understandable given everything that happens, but the hallucinations are a particularly vicious and nice touch. I also liked her blooming friendship with Dominic – it’s nice to see a family feud, that Ava herself still holds, begin to heal.
I did struggle with Ava’s friendships, we don’t see enough of the girls, and the one with Ford is purposefully messed up. But that’s my only real niggle.
The story is also brilliantly paced, I just flew through it, dying to know what would happen next.
I definitely recommend this, 4.5 stars.
